Rethinking multi-use facilities with the right flooring protection strategy

Today’s sports facilities are no longer designed exclusively for sport. Across Europe, gymnasiums and indoor sports halls have evolved into true community hubs, hosting everything from school exams and public meetings to concerts, receptions, exhibitions and emergency response activities.

This transformation creates a new challenge for facility owners and local authorities: how can a sports floor continue to deliver high athletic performance while also supporting intensive non-sport activities?

The answer lies in a smart combination of:

  • choosing the right sports flooring system,
  • understanding the level of multi-use exposure,
  • and implementing the appropriate protection solution when needed.

At Tarkett Sports, we believe versatility should never come at the expense of performance, durability or aesthetics.

Understanding multi-use requirements

The concept of “multi-use” is often underestimated. In reality, not all non-sport activities create the same level of stress on a floor. A simple examination setup with tables and chairs has very different requirements compared to a concert stage, a flea market or the use of heavy maintenance machinery. Understanding these different usage profiles is essential to defining the right flooring and protection strategy.

Some activities generate only light constraints and can be supported directly by dedicated multi-use sports flooring systems. This is typically the case for exams, meetings or polling stations, where the floor is mainly exposed to standard furniture loads.

More demanding events such as receptions, community gatherings or temporary commercial activities often expose the floor to food, beverages, repeated foot traffic and frequent furniture movement. In these situations, protective solutions such as Touchdown or Protectiles are recommended to preserve the surface appearance, simplify cleaning operations and maintain the long-term quality of the flooring.

For larger-scale events such as concerts, stages or technical productions, the constraints become significantly more demanding due to concentrated static and rolling loads generated by heavy equipment, staging structures or technical installations. In these cases, more robust protection systems, such as heavy-duty load distribution panels or wooden protection boards, should be implemented to ensure optimal floor preservation and prevent structural damage.

Different sports flooring solutions support different levels of multi-use

The flooring itself also plays a major role in determining the level of protection required. Compact PVC sports flooring offers excellent durability and easy maintenance for light community use, while dedicated multi-use vinyl systems are specifically engineered to combine sports performance with higher resistance to indentation and rolling loads. Solutions such as Omnisports Reference Multi-use (P1 class) have been developed precisely for this purpose, allowing sports halls to support everyday community activities while remaining compliant with EN14904 requirements.

Combined systems with Linosport top surface (A3 and A4 class) provide another effective solution for facilities seeking both durability and natural aesthetics. In many cases, they can accommodate standard non-sport activities without requiring additional protection.

Wood sports floors, on the other hand, represent a premium investment and are often chosen for their exceptional sports experience and visual appeal. However, wood surfaces are naturally more sensitive to scratches, liquids and concentrated loads. For this reason, any extra-sport activity hosted on wood flooring should be accompanied by a dedicated protection solution.

Beyond preventing visible damage, floor protection plays a much broader role in facility management. A proper protection strategy helps extend the lifespan of the sports floor, reduce maintenance costs and preserve the quality of play over time. It also contributes to safer event operations and allows venues to transition more efficiently between sporting and non-sporting activities.

To simplify decision-making, Tarkett Sports recommends evaluating multi-use needs according to the intensity of the activity and the associated risks. See “Multi-use decision guide” below.

Choosing the right strategy for multi-use sports facilities

The future of sports infrastructure is clearly multifunctional. Communities expect sports halls to remain active, flexible and capable of supporting a wide range of activities throughout the year. But true versatility requires more than simply opening the doors to additional events. It requires a comprehensive flooring strategy that balances athlete safety, operational efficiency, durability and long-term investment protection.

With the right combination of flooring systems and protection solutions, sports facilities can confidently evolve into dynamic multi-purpose spaces while preserving the performance and appearance expected from a high-quality sports floor.
