In the world of sports flooring, innovation and sustainability are key drivers in transforming how gymnasiums and athletic spaces are built and maintained. One such groundbreaking technology is GreenLay™—an exclusive installation method by Tarkett Sports. It’s a pioneering approach that merges high performance, environmental responsibility, and cost efficiency.
Let’s dive into what GreenLay™ is, its journey since its inception, how it works, and its undeniable impact on the environment.
What is GreenLay™?
GreenLay™ is a unique, 98% adhesive-free installation method designed specifically for Tarkett Sports’ Omnisports Multi-Use, Active+, and PurePlay resilient sports flooring. With the ability to tolerate moisture levels up to 7%, GreenLay™ eliminates the need for moisture barriers, making it both eco-friendly and budget friendly.
By using significantly less adhesive, it becomes easier to remove and recycle the flooring when it reaches the end of its lifecycle, making it a highly sustainable solution.
The History of GreenLay
GreenLay™ was first developed by Tarkett Sports in 1995, when it was used in a gymnasium that faced temperature fluctuations and rising moisture levels from a nearby river. Despite these challenging conditions, the installation is still intact and in perfect condition after 25 years of use.
This successful application demonstrated the longevity and durability of GreenLay™, which has since grown in popularity. To date, over 2 million square meters of GreenLay™ have been installed worldwide, including extensive installations across Europe.
Remarkably, not a single failure has been reported when the product has been properly installed, solidifying GreenLay™ as a game-changer in sports flooring.
The History of GreenLay
Unlike traditional flooring systems that rely heavily on adhesives, GreenLay™ utilises minimal adhesive at key points—such as the perimeter of the court, doorways, and around volleyball sleeves. Tarkett’s Tarkotape is used to secure seams for welding, while the Omnisports material itself, with its superior dimensional stability and nearly tension-free manufacturing process, takes care of the rest. This innovative approach not only simplifies installation but also accelerates the entire process by 20%, reducing downtime and minimising disruptions.
The GreenLay™ method is designed to be moisture-resistant, ensuring that floors can be installed in environments with up to 7% moisture without performance issues. Additionally, its easy access to the subfloor allows for maintenance without damaging the flooring or the subfloor beneath.

Environmental Impact
One of the most appealing aspects of GreenLay™ is its positive impact on the environment. By reducing adhesive use to less than 2% of the surface area, it minimises the chemical waste typically associated with traditional flooring installations. For example, a typical 1,000-square-meter gymnasium requires less than 10kg of adhesive.
This low-adhesive approach also means that recycling the floor at the end of its life is much easier GreenLay™ installations are also eligible for Tarkett’s ReStart® recycling program, further ensuring that the materials have a second life.
Why Choose GreenLay™?
The benefits of GreenLay™ extend far beyond its environmental advantages. Its proven reliability, with over 25 years of field experience and 2 million square meters installed, is a testament to its durability and performance.
Moreover, it’s not just about saving on installation time—GreenLay™ provides long-term cost savings by reducing the need for moisture barriers and making recycling at the end of the product’s life possible.
Plus, with a 15-year guarantee on PVC (Vinyl), it offers peace of mind alongside performance.
GreenLay™ represents the future of sports flooring—an era where performance, sustainability, and cost-efficiency come together. With its minimal adhesive requirement, easy installation process, and environmental advantages, it’s no wonder that GreenLay™ has become the new standard for sports flooring around the world.
